Dosage and dosage schedules
Secretolytic in inflammation of the respiratory tract:
Adults and adolescents from 14 years of age: ½ tablet twice daily or 1 effervescent tablet once daily (600 mg acetylcysteine daily in 1-2 individual doses).
Mucoviscidosis:
Treatment should be started with lower doses and gradually increased. The total daily dose is divided into 3 individual doses.
In patients with mucoviscidosis and body weight over 30 kg, the appropriate daily dose may be increased up to 800 mg.
The duration of treatment depends on individual circumstances. Treatment of chronic bronchitis and mucoviscidosis should be long-term to allow prophylaxis of respiratory tract infections.
Method of use
The drug is taken after meals. The effervescent tablet is dissolved in a glass half-filled with water shortly before consumption. The dissolved effervescent tablet should be taken shortly after preparation. In exceptional cases, the prepared solution can stand for up to 2 hours, even warm, because it contains the stabilizer ascorbic acid (vitamin C).
Notice
The drug should be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding only after a strict benefit-risk assessment.
The drug should not be given to children under 14 years of age because of the high content of the drug. Acetylcysteine may be administered to children under 1 year of age only when vitally indicated, at a dose of 10 mg/kg body weight and only under strict hospital supervision.
The drug should not be used in patients with hepatic or renal failure to avoid further nitrate influx.
The drug is contraindicated in people with active peptic ulcer.
Oral antibiotics should be given separately from acetylcysteine, at least 2 hours apart (this does not apply to cefixime and loracarbef).
Increased fluid intake is recommended while taking the drug (to support the mucolytic effect of acetylcysteine).
This medicine contains 6 mmol (or 139 mg) of sodium per dose. To be considered in patients with reduced renal function or those on a sodium-controlled diet.
The drug contains lactose.
The packaging should be kept tightly closed to protect against moisture.
Further special warnings are given in the SPC (section 4.4).
