Folic acid - folate

It contributes to the growth of germ tissues during pregnancy. It helps the proper functioning of the immune system, the reduction of exhaustion and fatigue and the proper functioning of the psyche. It contributes to the proper synthesis of amino acids, plays a role in the process of cell division. It also aids in the proper metabolism of homocysteine, the proper formation of blood.

In order for the body to use folic acid, it must metabolise it into a biologically active form, called 5-methyltetrahydrofolate, through a multi-step process in which the enzyme methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) plays a key role. Genetic mutations, such as polymorphisms, can impair the activity of the MTHFR enzyme. Because of this, some individuals' bodies are unable to convert sufficient amounts of folic acid into active folate. MTHFR polymorphisms are thought to occur in up to 57% of the population.

Quatrefolic®

It is the glucosamine salt of (6S)-5-methyltetrahydrolistic acid and is structurally analogous to the biologically active form of folic acid. It is a metabolized folic acid that is no longer dependent on the MTHFR enzyme, the body can use it directly, even in people with MTHFR mutations.

Another advantage is that Quatrefolic® passes through the gastric barrier and is absorbed mainly in the small intestine by a mechanism mediated by the carrier glucosamine salt, which ensures for Quatrefolic® an extremely high water solubility and thus a higher folate absorption and better bioavailability.

Recommended dosage

• Children 14 years and older and adults: 1 tablet daily.
• Women planning pregnancy and pregnant women up to the end of the 12th week of pregnancy: 2 tablets daily.
• Pregnant women from the 13th week of pregnancy and lactating women: 1 tablet daily.
