Biomedica Lactulose Syrup
Description: Biomedica Lactulose Syrup
The drug contains lactulose. It is an osmotically acting laxative (laxative). Lactulose also exhibits a prebiotic effect. The drug is used:
- in chronic constipation caused primarily by impaired defecation reflex due to bad habits or the need for soft stools.
- on the advice of a doctor in portosystemic encephalopathy (central nervous system disorders that accompany liver damage).
Method of use
Dosage and dosage schedules
1 ml contains 0.667 g of lactulose.
For constipation and to facilitate defecation:
The dosage is adjusted according to the individual patient's response, usually starting with a higher dose, which is reduced after 3 days.
Adults:
The initial dose is 15 - 45 ml (1 - 3 tablespoons) (equivalent to 10.005 g - 30.015 g of lactulose) per day.
For long-term administration, 10 - 25 ml (2 - 5 teaspoons) (equivalent to 6.67 g - 16.675 g of lactulose) per day.
Children:
Up to 1 year: 2.5 - 5 ml (half to 1 teaspoon) (equivalent to 1.6675 g - 3.335 g of lactulose) per day.
From 1 - 6 years: 5 - 10 ml (1 - 2 teaspoons) (equivalent to 3.335 g - 6.67 g of lactulose) per day.
Ages 7-15: Initial dose: 15 ml (1 tablespoon) (equivalent to 10.005 g of lactulose). Next: 5 - 10 ml (1 - 2 teaspoons) (equivalent to 3.335 g - 6.67 g of lactulose) per day.
With insufficient effect, the dose can be increased. After the therapeutic effect has been achieved, an appropriately reduced maintenance dose is administered.
Usually, a full daily dose is taken once a day after breakfast.
Portosystemic encephalopathy:
Dosage is individual.
Adults:
Usually 30-90 ml (2-6 tablespoons) (equivalent to 20.01 g-60.03 g of lactulose) is taken daily, divided into 3 doses after main meals.
Treatment is started with lower doses and gradually increased to the optimal dose at which the patient has 2-3 soft stools daily, stool pH should be 5.0-5.5.
If diarrhoea develops, the dosage is reduced accordingly.
Children:
In children, the dosage is reduced by half.
